Corrigan inspires with State of the City Address at
Burnaby Board of Trade luncheon
Burnaby, April, 2010 - Mayor Derek Corrigan delivered an inspirational State of the City Address to a packed room of Burnaby's business leaders, local politicians and invited guests at the Burnaby Board of Trade's Annual Luncheon that took place at the Executive Hotel on Lougheed in April.
Focusing on the theme of Burnaby as a creative city, Corrigan lauded the values a creative city brings to its citizens and the business community.
Inspired by a recent trip to Barcelona as part of Canada's Creative City Network's "International Regions Benchmarking Consortium", Corrigan revealed the concept of a creative City has been at work in Burnaby for years. "We are a City that has always strived for excellence, fuelled by the imagination of our business people and our citizens. Both the City and the business community have excelled at serving citizens, protecting the environment and building a vibrant, progressive city. We are a diverse city, where disparate and complementary ideas fuse to form unique partnerships and innovations," he said.
Corrigan also gave recognition to many of Burnaby's successful leading-edge businesses and their highly-valued employees while confirming City Council's sound management practices have provided a solid, debt-free foundation for both business and citizens to thrive.
Looking forward to the future, Corrigan announced Burnaby has won the bid to host the 2012 BC Seniors Games where nearly 4,000 seniors, ranging from 55 to over 90 years of age, will compete in 26 sporting events held in venues throughout the City. This event comes on the heels of Burnaby hosting the award-winning 2009 World Police & Fire Games.
