Social Sustainability Strategy Initiative Underway

Burnaby, May, 2010 - Development of Burnaby's Social Sustainability Strategy, launched by the City in March, joins with the City's Economic Development Strategy and the forthcoming Environmental Sustainability Strategy to provide the foundation for Burnaby's long range planning goals to keep Burnaby a strong, vibrant and inclusive livable community for citizens to live, work and play.

The Social Sustainability Strategy is a key intiative that features a blue ribbon panel of more than 20 community and business leaders who will work together with consultants, staff and citizens to ensure the City's social infrastructure is guided by citizen involvement.

The goals of the Steering Committee leading the development of the Social Sustainability Strategy are to develop a strategic "social sustainability" direction for the City to pursue, taking into consideration existing social policies, initatives, programs and plans, as well as identifying the roles other partners can play, such as senior governments, service providers, businesses and the community.

Members of the Steering Committee were selected for their commitment to social issues, broad and balanced base of experience, belief in Burnaby's potential and willingness to contribute to and advocate on behalf of the community. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan serves as the Chair, with Councillors Volkow, Calendino, McDonell and Kang serving as Council Representatives on the Task Force.
