Burnaby Citizens Association thanks the good people of Burnaby for showing confidence in civic leadership

November 21, 2011, Burnaby, BC – Elected to all council and school trustee seats in Burnaby for the second time in a row, the Burnaby Citizens Association would like to thank all the good people who participated in Saturday's civic election.
Mayor Derek Corrigan, who was elected to serve a fourth term, was applauded at the BCA victory party on Saturday evening as he thanked Burnaby voters for “having a great deal of faith in our government”.
Hundreds of supporters, volunteers, family members and friends gathered at the Alan Emmott Centre on Southoaks in Burnaby early in the evening to watch the election results on a large screen via the the internet. The BCA campaign supporters, volunteers and staff were in full swing all day to pull the vote and after the polls closed, it became clear their efforts were all worthwhile.
BCA president Gord Larkin took the microphone just after 9 pm to announce the election results and invited Mayor Corrigan to take the podium. After a very moving speech, interrupted by frequent applause, Corrigan invited his fellow BCA incumbent councillors to join with him – Pietro Calendino, Dan Johnston, Anne Kang, Colleen Jordan, Richard Chang, Sav Dhaliwal, Paul McDonell and Nick Volkow.
Corrigan congratulated Larry Hayes and the school trustees as Hayes took the podium, thanked Burnaby voters, the campaign team and volunteers and introduced the four incumbent trustees – Ron Burton, Gary Wong, James Wang and Baljinder Narang – who were re-elected and welcomed Meiling Chia and Harman Pandher as the newest trustees.
The Burnaby Citizens Association would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers and supporters who helped out with the campaign to keep Burnaby strong and a great place to live, work, learn, play and do business!

BCA Fundraiser Dinner more than a complete success with 350 guests gathering for an enjoyable evening of socializing and strong show of support for our candidates

The evening of Thursday, October 27th saw 350 guests gather at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel in Burnaby to socialize and show their strong support for Derek Corrigan and the BCA candidates for Council and School Trustee at the Annual Burnaby Citizens Association Fundraiser Dinner, “An Evening with Mayor Derek Corrigan & Friends”.
Derek Corrigan, who is seeking re-election for a fourth term as Mayor of Burnaby, was joined by his family, including his wife Kathy, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake, his four adult children and their spouses, partners and guests. In his after dinner speech, Derek was joined on-stage by all 8 Burnaby City Councillors - Pietro Calendino; Richard Chang; Sav Dhaliwal; Dan Johnston; Colleen Jordan; Anne Kang; Paul McDonell; and, Nick Volkow - as he thanked each of them individually for their valuable contributions in helping run the “Best City in Canada”. All the BCA candidates for Council are incumbents seeking re-election. Corrigan also applauded the guests for their generosity of volunteer time, donations and for showing such strong support for himself and all the BCA candidates running in the current election campaign.
Incumbent School Trustee candidate Larry Hayes, who is seeking re-election, spoke to guests and thanked them for their encouragement and support for the BCA incumbent School Trustee candidates as they joined him at the podium - Ron Burton, Baljinder Narang, James Wang and Gary Wong. He also introduced first-time candidates Meiling Chia and Harman Pandher who have been very busy on the campaign trail and were joined this evening by many of their personal supporters, friends and family.
The evening concluded with a fabulous live auction with Tom Sigurdson, Executive Director of the BC & Yukon Building Trades Council as the auctioneer.
Gord Larkin, president of the BCA, closed the evening’s event with a major thank you to guests who remained at the Hilton ballroom chatting and socializing for more than an hour after the event was over.
BCA candidates join with delegates at New Westminster & District Labour Council Local Government Issues Forum

BCA candidates including Derek Corrigan, Richard Chang, Sav Dhaliwal, Dan Johnston, Colleen Jordan, Anne Kang, Paul McDonell, Larry Hayes, Ron Burton, Baljinder Narang, Meiling Chia, Harman Pandher, James Wang and Gary Wong attended the New Westminster & District Labour Council “Local Government Issues” forum that took place on Wednesday, October 26th at the Operating Engineers Hall in Burnaby where delegates had an opportunity to discuss important issues with candidates. BCA council candidates Pietro Calendino and Nick Volkow were unable to attend due to other community commitments
All 16 BCA candidates have been endorsed by the NW&D Labour Council and appreciated the opportunity to meet with delegates who represent their unions in the local area. The facilitated discussions featured topics ranging from housing to transportation.
The BCA candidates are part of the 69 candidates in total who have been endorsed by the Labour Council for this year's municipal election.
Dan Johnston ‘explains the facts’ to Burnaby Civic Greens in rebuttal letter published in the Burnaby Now
BCA candidate and long time City Councillor Dan Johnston, who serves as the Council liaison to the Finance Department at Burnaby City Hall and is the Chair of the Finance and Civic Development Committee, addressed Burnaby Civic Greens’ misperceptions and misunderstanding of Burnaby's financial reserves in a well-written rebuttal letter published in the Burnaby Now on October 21st.
Johnston writes, “Burnaby's reserves continue to assist the city's growth. The city is debt-free and continues to have one of the region's lowest tax increases.
“Our strong reserves have ensured that as our population grows, our infrastructure can grow too. Burnaby enjoys some of the best facilities and services in Canada, in part due to the fact that our Burnaby Citizens Association Council has ensured that Burnaby is strong and will continue to be so.”

Supporters, friends and volunteers celebrate BCA Campaign Office Opening!
October 16, 2011 - More than 100 supporters came out to the BCA - Burnaby Citizens campaign office on Sunday October 16th to celebrate the official “Campaign Kick-Off” for the fall 2011 municipal election in Burnaby.
Derek Corrigan, who is seeking re-election as Mayor, joined with supporters and volunteers to “cut the cake” with the BCA - Burnaby Citizens candidates for Council and School Trustee and celebrate the 2011 campaign launch. The beautiful sunny day saw supporters and volunteers spilling out onto the sidewalk enjoying refreshments, meeting and greeting BCA candidates, listening to speeches and then heading home with their campaign lawn signs and commitments to elect BCA candidates to keep Burnaby strong!
Derek Corrigan addressed the crowd and introduced each Council candidate with a personal tribute, stating "Each and every step of the way it is critical that each of our councillors is re-elected." He thanked the councillors for their leadership that has helped describe Burnaby as the best run city in Canada.
"Five out of nine of our councillors were not born in Canada", said Corrigan, adding they range in age from their 30s through to their 70's, reflecting the demographics of Burnaby.
Larry Hayes, who is seeking re-election as a BCA - Burnaby Citizens School Trustee and currently serves as Chair of the School Board, introduced his incumbent colleagues - Ron Burton, Baljinder Narang, Gary Wong and James Wang - and newcomers Meiling Chia and Harman Pandher who were joined by many of their friends, family and supporters.
After the speeches, BCA - Burnaby Citizens candidates mingled with the crowd and then gathered their campaign materials and leaflets and out the door they went, heading out to Burnaby neighbourhoods to knock on doors, greet voters, listen to concerns, discuss issues and ask for their support on election day.
Many more events will be taking place over the course of the campaign offering more opportunities for voters to meet the BCA - Burnaby Citizens candidates for Mayor, Council and School Trustee before heading to the ADAVANCE POLLS ON NOVEMBER 5, 8, 9 & 16 or on ELECTION DAY, Saturday, November 19.
